All right folks, another Wednesday another blog post. So, discipline is one of those terms people use and rarely gives any context in terms of how you obtain this asset. Discipline is practicing a behavior that enables you to achieve a defined positive outcome. It can be a small goal, a large goal, a corporate goal it’s a broad range. How do you transfer daydreams in your head into meaningful outcomes? Discipline.
So, if you want to obtain 50K dollars, a new job, weight loss, a goal in a video game… all of these things require some form of discipline. How you obtain it is subjective to what you want to achieve honestly. Achieving more wealth requires a type of discipline that is different than slaying 50 orcs in a video game. However, each can be achieved with a few simple tasks, which if you perform these tasks will enable you to achieve discipline.
I am going to do a bullet list below to try and simplify the process:
- Get a cheap notebook: This will seem like an odd step 1, but it will be clear as we go through the steps.
- Write down the goal: “I want to lose 50 pounds” or “I want to save 100K” Putting it in writing, in your new notebook is a psychological exercise. When you write it down, it is no longer just a thought its tangible, you are now actually going to have to throw it away, cross it out etc.
- Research: You have to figure out how to obtain the goal. This now requires you to take your time and figure out how you want to achieve this goal. This is one of the key elements to discipline and it’s usually the first place people fail. It takes time to accumulate the information, understand it, summarize it in your notebook.
- Time management: So, you have the goal, and a list of things to achieve (quit soda, save 20 per week, etc.) now you have to manage your time to achieve to enable you to get these tasks done. Example: you want to lose weight, you need to set aside time to work out. Write down your plan: “5000 steps every day starting 6-7:30 PM”
- Benchmarks: List out some benchmarks. These are your “wins.” Examples: “Lost 10 pounds 7.23.24” or “obtained new suit 8.15.24”
- Execute: So, you are going through your notebook, recording the steps, taking the time to do what you need to achieve the goal. You are being disciplined.
So now you need to keep doing this, rinse repeat for small goals in your life. Over time this becomes a habit and now you are truly achieving discipline. You are not just daydreaming about a goal, a want, or a desire, you are formulating a plan to obtain it, executing it and getting it. That is discipline and it takes years and years of practice to make this a habit.
If you can make it a habit you will begin to see a lot of positive changes, the most significant one happens early. Your confidence levels rise because you are actually doing something meaningful to improve yourself. You have determined a goal you want to achieve, developed a plan to obtain and are executing it. Most people never do this, most successful people do.
